Tutoring at Sunset View every week during the fall and during the summer of 09, was one of the most enligthening experiences of my life. We're so very fortunate to be able to give back to our community and I'm glad that APX has made this connection with Sunset View. The inspiration I have received from the kids has been amazing and I have been reminded about the things that are truly important in life: service and impacting the lives of others.

I am a suscriber to Apex Alarm and the service has been great. I commend you on your efforts to give back to the community such as Sunset View Schools. If we had more businesses and individuals such as yourseves, we could have a better education for all by keeping education in the private sector.

I recently started mentoring at Sunset View and it is such a pleasure working with the kids. I actually used to teach at sunset view in the after school program and so being able to go back and see the kids who I used to work with has been amazing. Seeing them learn and grow and knowing I am a part of that is very rewarding! They are also super cute and so much fun. They will provide you with very good entertainment!

Working with these kids was so much fun. What was most fun was encouraging the kids and helping them to gain confidence in themselves. These kids are so smart and it was so fun to see their faces light up when they were told how smart they are! If anyone gets a chance to even go just once to help out, go! It is so worth your time.

I volunteered to tutor at Sunset View Elementary recently and was assigned to a 3rd grade class every Monday afternoon. We are just getting started so I have only been a few times but I have really enjoyed it so far. Each day the kids start off by finding a spot in the classroom to read aloud a book they have chosen and I get to sit with them and listen to them read, helping them sound out words and making sure they are comprehending what they are reading. They also practice common reading words and math problems on the computers and I spend time one-on-one with them helping them pass off each level. The after school program is only 40-45 minutes long and when there was only one teacher in the room the kids didn't get much attention so I can tell they appreciate having another helper around. One girl gravitated to me and was so happy to have another adult in her life to praise and help her that she held my hand while I walked the kids out to the bus at the end of the day. I hope to continue to be a positive influence in these children's lives and contribute to their education and happiness!

I’ve been mentoring at Sunset View for a few weeks now. I help the 6th grade students with writing skills and direct all the students at the end of the day to the bus stop. Having a 6th grader myself I very much enjoy communicating with these kids and the sense of feeling helpful I get being around the school.

My first day the kids thought I was huge and insisted that I was a mixed martial arts fighter, their creative minds bring a smile to my face and I only hope what we’re doing for them brings them as much satisfaction and joy that it brings me.

I tutored during the summer at Sunset View Elementary and fell in love with the kids I tutored there! It was only one hour per week for 4 or 5 weeks, but it was so much fun and very rewarding. I loved going to the school and grabbing my student out of class and one of them (a girl) being so excited that I was there for her! I know that by encouraging these kids to read and helping them and showing them their strengths, we can be a great benefit to these kids and to their futures. Hopefully I can be involved in this in the future!

its been fun so far to work with these students. They do see us volunteers as mentors and superhumans. My first week in the class was funny. I told the class my name was Mr. Campbell. Immediately they asked if I was the quarterback for the Washington Redskins. Then they asked if I lived in Washington. They all wanted me to play football with them during recess. So I was a legend right off the bat. Helping these kids read and being there to support them really gives them some hope and some direction for what lies ahead. We are doing a great servce to this school by being there with them. I thank everyone involved who set up this program, it has been very rewarding.

I have been lucky enough to be assigned to mentor the kids who go to art class after school on Thursdays. It is only an hour a week and essentially all I do is talk to the kids and help them glue things on their crafts, but it has been incredibly rewarding so far. These kids are just the sweetest things and are so fun to be able to hang out with. While helping them with their crafts may not seem like a big deal I can tell that the teacher does not have nearly enough time to give them all 1 on 1 attention and they crave it. They really do seem to love having us there and I'm sure that the teacher is so grateful to have a few extra hands around to help her especially considering as how the crafts can get pretty messy sometimes. I'm so glad that I've been able to do this!

I chose to volunteer with the mentoring program at Sunset View Elementary school thinking that I had plenty of extra time after work and it would be an opportunity to get out of the apartment and do some good in the world. I soon found myself picking up a 2nd job in order to pay for school. I was debating whether or not I would be able to commit myself to being a mentor after viewing my tuesday schedule and realizing that I would be waking up at 6, working from 7-3 at APX, tutoring at Sunset View from 4 till 5, and working my second job from 6 till 10:30, with little time for snacking, changing clothes, or even driving in between. I figured that my intentions were good for wanting to tutor, but that it probably wouldn't be the best seeing as how tight my schedule would end up. I went the first Tuesday and found myself humbled by these young students who had special needs. Most of the students in the 1st grade class struggle with reading. This hit home with me seeing as how my mother is a special needs teacher, and currently runs a business out of our home in California teaching/tutoring children of all ages to read. The class room brought a familar feeling as the upstairs corner of our home has long been decorated with colorful letters, numbers and shapes. I have to admit I got a little teary eyed at being there that first day, thinking how selfish I would be if I chose not to show up because I thought I was too busy. I have since enjoyed my time sitting on the floor with the students helping them sound out the letters as they practice reading. It is still early in the school year and I have only had the opportunity to be in that small classroom a few times. But I have found myself looking forward to Tuesdays, which are the busiest day I have all week, but also the most rewarding.

The teacher always has creative projects to work on and the children love it. It is so much fun and rewarding to help encourage them in their beautiful art projects. I'm really loving helping out and getting to know the children!
